Every year on April 22, we celebrate Earth Day, a time to reflect on how we can protect our planet for future generations. One of the best ways to make a difference is by improving energy efficiency in our homes.
Small changes can lead to big savings—both for the environment and your wallet. At Gallatin Department of Electricity (GDE), we’re committed to helping our community use energy wisely. Here are some simple and effective tips to reduce energy waste and make your home more efficient:
1. Switch to LED Lighting
Lighting accounts for a significant portion of home energy use. LED bulbs use at least 75% less energy and last up to 25 times longer than traditional incandescent bulbs. Make the switch to LEDs to lower your energy bills and reduce your carbon footprint.
2. Unplug Unused Devices
Many electronics continue to draw power even when they’re turned off—this is called phantom energy loss. Unplug devices when they’re not in use or use a smart power strip to cut off unnecessary power consumption.
3. Upgrade to Energy-Efficient Appliances
Older appliances devour power. Look for ENERGY STAR-certified refrigerators, dishwashers, and washing machines, which use 10-50% less energy than standard models. The upfront investment can lead to long-term savings.
4. Seal Air Leaks & Improve Insulation
Drafty windows and doors let your heated or cooled air escape, making your HVAC system work harder. Use weather stripping, caulk, or insulation to seal leaks and keep your home comfortable year-round.
5. Adjust Your Thermostat
A small adjustment in your thermostat can lead to big savings. Set your thermostat to 68°F in the winter and 78°F in the summer to optimize energy use. Better yet, invest in a programmable or smart thermostat to automatically adjust settings based on your schedule.
6. Use Natural Light & Smart Window Coverings
Maximize natural light during the day to reduce the need for artificial lighting. In the summer, use curtains or blinds to block heat, and in the winter, open them to let the sun warm your home naturally.
7. Schedule an Energy Audit
Want to know where you’re losing energy? Take our self assessment energy audit to identify inefficiencies and get personalized recommendations on how to improve your home’s energy performance.
8. Take Advantage of Rebates & Programs

Small Changes, Big Impact
This Earth Day, let’s commit to making small changes that can lead to a more sustainable future. By being mindful of energy consumption and making efficiency upgrades, we can reduce waste, lower costs, and protect the planet—one home at a time.
